Great Yarmouth Primary Academy launching after-school STEM Club following funding from STEMPOINT

Following an extremely competitive application process, Great Yarmouth Primary Academy is thrilled to have been awarded a grant of up to £500 from STEMPOINT East Charity which has allowed them to fund a Key Stage 2 after-school STEM Club. 

The funding has been used to purchase an array of exciting science equipment as well as enrol their pupils on the CREST award, which will provide the opportunity to complete a range of experiments each week, earning badges as they go. 

Georgia Guy, Principal at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy says:

“Our school community is really pleased to have been awarded a grant from STEMPOINT and hopes to make our STEM Club a continued success. This funding makes it possible for us to invest in our STEM offering and bring pupils new and exciting experiences to ignite a passion for STEM subjects. Mrs Remedio has worked hard to promote STEM across the school and is an exceptional Science Lead who has worked hard to secure funding.” 

As part of the CREST Award, each pupil is given their own CREST SuperStar Passport in which they record their journey as a STEM scientist. Throughout this journey, they will be solving real-life science, technology, engineering and maths challenges by taking part in numerous practical investigations and discussions.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this exciting club at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy and give pupils the best opportunities to try new things whilst promoting knowledge discovery in school. Funding has been put towards a range of science equipment to open up more exciting options in our STEM Club. I love to see children's faces light up with excitement at the STEM club every week and how much they love to put on their white overalls and be a scientist for an hour, investigating and solving problems.”

So far, pupils at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy have already learnt about aerodynamics while creating their own rocket and helicopter blades; they have learnt about support structures and masses by building strong bridges, and they have also begun exploring forensics by investigating their own fingerprints. 

This funding has been instrumental in helping us provide our pupils with these incredible opportunities, opening their minds to STEM careers from a young age and showing them how fun and interesting these subjects can be. Plus, the pupils truly enjoy being able to add a sticker to their CREST Passport every time they complete a challenge, whereby when complete they will receive the all-important CREST certificate and badge!
